Youth Firesetting (North Bay Youth Firesetting Intervention Coalition (NYFIC)
What is NYFIC?
North Bay Youth Firesetting Intervention Coalition (NYFIC) is a non-profit that was formed in 2019 to serve the communities within Sonoma, Marin, Lake, Mendocino & Napa Counties. NYFIC is a partnership between the fire, law enforcement and mental health agencies of each county, working together to provide services and education to youth who have been involved in fire setting. Our goal is to provide age-appropriate intervention, educating youth and adolescents about the serious consequences of fire setting activities.
Community safety is of the utmost importance when addressing fire setting behavior in children and adolescents. By identifying youth and adolescents that have participated in or thought about fire setting activities, we are able to prevent the consequences of such behavior. NYFIC utilizes the screening program developed by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) to evaluate children who have been involved in fire setting. After the youth are initially screened, they are referred to the NYFIC academy that is held annually with professionals from all disciplines. Once the academy is completed, it is our hope that the youth return to their communities educated with the information to prevent fire setting activities in the future.
